Darrington Press Community Gaming License

The Darrington Press Community Gaming License (DPCGL) empowers creators to build and share their own adventures, settings, characters, and gameplay content based on the rules and systems of Daggerheart and Candela Obscura. Whether you’re publishing printed supplements, running livestreams or podcasts, or creating digital materials for the tabletop community, this license gives you the freedom to use approved game mechanics and content—so long as you follow the outlined terms. It’s designed to support creativity while respecting the rights of Critical Role/Darrington Press and its original works.

FAQ

Yes, you can sell your homebrew Daggerheart-based product, but only if it’s built using the Daggerheart System Reference Document 1.0 (not the full rulebook) and you fully comply with the DPCGL. Treat the rulebook as inspiration—but build and sell from the SRD.

Yes, as a creator, you can run a crowdfunding campaign (e.g., on Kickstarter or Backerkit) to fund the development of a new campaign setting using Daggerheart or Candela Obscura rules under the Darrington Press Community Gaming License—as long as you follow the License terms and use only Public Game Content, not any Prohibited Content.

You also retain ownership of your original Adaptive Content (your campaign setting, stories, etc.). However, we retain ownership of the underlying Public Game Content you used to build it.

You do not owe Darrington Press or Critical Role any fees or royalties from your crowdfunding campaign or product sales as long as you’re compliant with the terms of the DPCGL.

You can talk about Darrington Press games and even show pieces of the Daggerheart SRD 1.0 or content marked as Public Game Content. But you can’t scan and share full pages, cards, or proprietary visuals from the books themselves.

Yes, you can absolutely upload videos of a campaign you are running using the Daggerheart or Candela Obscura systems—as long as you follow the rules in the Darrington Press Community Gaming License (DPCGL).

You can:

  • Upload actual play videos using the rules from the Daggerheart SRD 1.0 or Candela Obscura materials designated as Public Game Content.

  • Stream or publish on platforms like YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, etc.

  • Monetize your videos (ads, sponsors, etc.).

  • Use “Daggerheart™ Compatible” or “Candela Obscura™ Compatible” in your descriptions and marketing.

  • Create your own characters, storylines, campaign frames, etc.

  • Include the required attribution statement and community content logo in your video, description, or credits.

Depends. You can create and sell merch if:

  • The merchandise is based on your own original content (your setting, characters, etc.) created using the Daggerheart SRD 1.0 or Candela Obscura.

  • The merchandise is derived from Adaptive Content (your own stories, not Darrington Press’) and does not use Prohibited Content.

  • You follow the Darrington Press Community Gaming License (DPCGL) and only use Permitted Formats, or create transformative merch around your own creations.

You cannot:

  • Create merchandise using official logos, characters, names, locations, artwork, or visuals from Darrington Press, Critical Role, or their shows.

  • Sell merchandise that includes content like:

    • DRP logos or Critical Role trademarks

    • Art or story elements from the Candela Obscura or Daggerheart shows or books

Yes, you can sell your own adventures using the Candela Obscura or Daggerheart systems, as long as you follow the Darrington Press Community Gaming License (DPCGL).

You Can:

  • Sell original adventures, settings, campaign frames, and game supplements that use the rules and mechanics found in the Daggerheart SRD 1.0 or Candela Obscura materials explicitly listed as Public Game Content.

  • Distribute your work via digital storefronts, print-on-demand, or crowdfunding.

  • Use the phrases “Daggerheart™ Compatible” or “Candela Obscura™ Compatible” in marketing text (but not in titles).

  • Include the required attribution notice and community content logo on your product.

You are allowed to use “Daggerheart” in a descriptive way to show compatibility. For example:

  • “A new subclass compatible with Daggerheart™”

  • “An original campaign frame using the Daggerheart™ system”

  • “A podcast featuring stories told through the Daggerheart™ ruleset”

This use must follow DRP’s Name Mark rules under the DPCGL.

You cannot:

  • Use “Daggerheart” in the title of your work
For example: “Daggerheart: Shadows of the North”

  • Use it on the front cover of your product or prominently in logos/branding

  • Present your product as official or endorsed by Darrington Press or Critical Role

You may live-stream gameplay from playtest materials (such as those from The Void) on platforms like Twitch or YouTube. However, you cannot sell or monetize any products based on playtest content, including written supplements, novels, or paid access to content.

The Darrington Press Community Gaming License (DPCGL) is designed to let creators independently make, share, and sell their own content using Daggerheart and Candela Obscura systems.

If you are interested in working with us in an official licensing capacity, please email [email protected]. We partner selectively, and any initial inquiries must be supported by a comprehensive business plan.
